Forestry Facts – Better Training Now Available

Dear Reader,

In September 2012 Lantra Awards launched the most comprehensive suite of forestry and arboriculture qualifications and training courses in the UK. This is a really exciting and significant change as it means you can get all the training you need in one place, saving you time and money.

In this issue of Growing Skills we’ll make sense of all the recent changes, explain why they’ve been made and tell you what options are now available to you.

We'd like to thank everyone who responded to our survey last month with your comments and views about our newsletter.  We really do appreciate you taking the time to answer our questions, and enjoyed reading the feedback.  We will take into consideration all the ideas and suggestions to improve our newsletter.

The winner of the £200 training voucher, chosen at random from all the people who took part in the survey is Mrs J. Ayers .  Congratulations Mrs Ayres, please contact me to discuss which training course you would like to attend.

If you have any specific questions that we don’t answer in this newsletter, please do get in touch by clicking here to email us or by calling us on 01285 889 873.

Best wishes,

James

Forestry Training and Assessment all in One Place

Lantra Awards is the lead company responsible for awarding qualifications in forestry and arboriculture training in the UK, specialising in nationally recognised, accredited training and qualifications. They have been designing courses for over 40 years, so know what is needed from the training, from short courses to full qualifications, to meet your needs. Whether you are an employer with members of staff who need training, or you are the learner yourself, there are courses to suit. They are all very high quality and delivered by an exclusive network – including the Rural Skills Centre.

The new range of qualifications and training has been created to follow new National Occupational Standards. This means they will meet industry needs for people working in the establishment, care, maintenance and management of individual trees, woodlands and forests, who need training and assessment.

The way the new qualifications and training has been set up means that you can carry out both the training and the assessment with the same Lantra approved training provider, which will save you time and money. In the past, you had to be trained by one provider and assessed by someone else; now you can do it all in one place.

There are many new courses available, covering all levels of requirements, from courses for occasional users, to courses that underpin the Licence to Practice, to full Qualifications & Credit Frameworks (QCF) qualifications. Examples of some of the new qualifications include:

Level 2 Award in Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-cutting
Level 2 Award in Felling and Processing Trees up to 380mm
Level 2 Award in Accessing a Tree Using a Rope and Harness
Level 3 Award in Aerial Tree Rescue Operations

As one of the approved Lantra training centres, the Rural Skills Centre will be running many of the new courses and qualifications, so you can be trained and assessed at the same location.

Where can you get more industry advice?

We have made a number of short videos, showing you how to use a chainsaw safely and learn various forestry techniques. Click to watch the videos on chainsaws and tree skills.
