February 2009

Dear Reader,

This month, I'm concentrating on the personal aspects of making a video – what it means for you, how it could enhance your business and how our approach is different.

If your immediate reaction is that it's not something you could do, my answer is Yes You Can! (to misquote President Obama and Bob the Builder…)

Using a video introduction has been described as a ‘firm handshake'. You wouldn't wait until halfway through a meeting to introduce yourself – so why not put your video on your front page and offer a personal welcome?

Best wishes, and don't forget to send me your feedback!

Gill

Convert Your Visitors

Have you ever passed someone in the street and smiled because you knew them? Then realised that you didn't actually know them – it was that TV actor you recognised! That's the power of video. It engages people before they've even met you.

There's no doubt about it – having a short well-placed video, which shows your personality, offers a genuinely warm welcome to the company, an invitation to come in and find out why you're different to the rest.

Your visitors will feel they already know the person they'll be dealing with when they first make contact. And the upshot is an average 40% increase in your conversion rate.

Why not think beyond your website? Your business could also benefit from a video demonstrating what you do and how you do it to show at presentations. Go high definition and you could be using your video on the big screen at an exhibition.

I can’t go on video because…

… I don't think I'll be very convincing.

The typical response on being asked to appear in a video is: "I don't know what I'm going to say! I must think of something." This panic is completely natural, but also counter-productive.

People are at their most interesting and passionate when they're relaxed. The aim of the way we work is to encourage that state of mind. You don't forget your lines or stumble over your words when you're speaking naturally.

You don't need a script. No one knows more about what they need to say than you, so it's just a matter of helping you to release that information in a natural and engaging way.

We work with Sarah McCloughry of Anrah Mind and Body. She's a voice coach who is also very experienced at performance training, NLP and hypnotherapy. Just half an hour with Sarah, before the shoot, will result in you giving a coherent and compelling performance.

… I can't look at a camera and talk at the same time!

This is a very common and natural worry. People who can do it well are very rare.

For this reason, we hardly ever encourage people to talk to the camera. Instead, we'll interview you, Parkinson style. This gives a more natural performance, because you'll be chatting to another human being. See more about camera shyness on our website.

…I'm too old/ugly/fat.

We all pick at our reflection in the mirror or our image in photographs and it's very painful for us. But we're the only ones who see it. So we fear that what we're going to see is going to be painful or embarrassing.

The truth is that anyone speaking passionately about what they do is fascinating and very attractive to watch. That's why we work hard to bring out your passion when we interview you. A certain amount of self-consciousness is natural at first, but we'll help you through it.

We go to a lot of trouble to help you look your best. We use coloured lights on the backdrop, or use a complementary background to go with your natural colouring.

If you're not sure what to wear, we'll suggest you bring in a selection of outfits and we'll advise you. We'll also suggest a visit to a stylist for hair and maybe even a makeover before the shoot. We can arrange for these things at extra cost, if needed.

You'll never be left alone during the shoot and you'll get our undivided attention. Afterwards, you'll be walking on air, delighted to find that what you thought was impossible only an hour earlier, is something you've done well. Your presentation skills will have improved hugely and you've taken a big personal step. And you'll have a great video!
