Dear Anne

It's Spring! How good does that feel? As I write this, the sun is shining and it looks like we may be in for a nice warm Spring this year. The sunshine makes me feel so much better. It seems to put a spring in everyone's step. That's why this month I thought I'd focus on ways you can conjure up your own positive energy every day.

Why not share your tips on how you keep positive when you're feeling tired or down. I'd love to hear the tricks you've developed over the years! You can email or call me on 01697 747 821.

Best wishes,

The Positive Part – How tDo You Bottle Your Happiness?

Your chances of success in any undertaking can always be measured by your belief in yourself.

Robert Collier

Do you ever experience those moments when you're so happy that you want to capture that feeling forever? Do you have times when you feel on top of the world and you want to bottle the feeling so you can experience it all the time?

Unfortunately it's simply not possible to feel completely happy 24/7. Besides, where is the fun in that? It would be like having an endless supply of chocolate cake and being able to eat it without piling on a single pound! Eventually (although it might take a while) the novelty would wear off and you'd fail to notice how good the cake tasted. You'll have to trust me on this one!

Another thing that you may have noticed is that when you feel happy, everything seems to go right. That's because you've got a spring in your step, a smile on your face and a very positive outlook. That kind of positive energy is extremely powerful and it's catching! If you give good vibes out, people will pick up on them and be more receptive to you.

You may not be able to conjure up that feeling of elation whenever you want to, but you can convince yourself to paste on a smile, pretend your hardest to have a positive attitude and walk with the same confidence you have when you're feeling ‘up'. Just try it. It really is a case of mind over matter. Before long you'll start to feel better and if just one person returns your smile, then that's a very good start! Fake it till you make it really works in the positive attitude arena.

Positive Practice

Conjuring up positive energy when you're feeling tired and stressed or have things on your mind is actually easier than you may think. Here are three simple steps that you can follow:

  • Take time out. It may sound obvious but most people try to soldier on and hope any problems they have will go away. If you're tired, find time to take a nap or get an early night. If you've got things on your mind, stop and try to find a resolution.
  • Wake up and think positively. Our minds start buzzing with everything we've got to do from the moment we wake up. Force yourself to lie in bed for a few minutes and think only positive thoughts. If you tell yourself it's going to be a good day – it's more likely to work out that way.
  • Spread a good vibe. Stop being so engrossed in your own life all of the time. Remember to smile. Remember to stop and make sure those people around you are ok. Do something nice for someone everyday. It's amazing how good that can make you feel!

Think about how you react to people who always seem grumpy or moan a lot. Now think about how you feel when you're with someone who is happy and positive. Why not aim to be that positive and happy person – and spread some smiles around the place!?

What Can You Do?

Gail from Bristol needed an injection of zing.

Gail had a lot on her plate. She was project managing a big move at work and sometimes nothing seemed to go right. She got nothing but moans from all the staff and the management just kept pushing her for results. By the end of the week she often felt as if she was further away from her targets than she had been on Monday.

On our first coaching call I asked her to get a small notebook and at the end of every day jot down a note of what had gone right that day -the things she had been pleased about. When I talked to her a couple of weeks later she said she felt much lighter. She was no longer carrying around so much negativity as writing down the positive things had helped her notice more positive things happening every day! She felt that she was smiling more and she felt much happier about her work.

What’s Happening?

So in the last month I've delivered Fresh Steps tasters, workshops on relaunching your powerful new image, assertiveness and networking, as well as Springboard courses and Spring Forward courses. I've also done face to face and telephone coaching and I've written in-depth evaluation reports, a couple of articles and a poem. I've also visited all four corners of England - working in Essex, Bristol, Newcastle and Carlisle, and I've worked with police services, universities, drug companies, engineering firms and manufacturers. A pretty busy month by all accounts! What has yours been like? What else can I do to make it better?

We are having more Fresh Steps tasters and a Fresh Steps course is starting in September at NWEO in Salford. We had one client who sent out an email to all her older workers and within 24 hours she had filled two courses. What more do you need to know? Contact me by email or call me on 01697 747 821 for details.

Next month we're going to take our positive vibe one step further and work on our assertiveness skills.
