October 2008

Dear Anne

It's a shock to get back from Darwin, where it was 34 degrees, to our foggy and clammy autumnal weather.  However I do look forward to those clear and chilly days when I can grab a warm jumper and dig out my wellies for a brisk walk.  It's a great opportunity to get out and clear my head.  I hope we all get a few dry days and you can make the most of it too!

Why not try the Positive Practice exercise below whilst you're out and about?  I promise it will leave you with a warm glow, even if the weather doesn't!  As always, don't forget to forward this on to friends and colleagues who might enjoy a boost of Positive Energy each month.  And if you'd like to get in touch you can email me or call me on 01697 747 821

Bye for now,

The Positive Part – Making the Most of You

Find out who you are and do it on purpose.Dolly Parton

Do you have a vision in life?  Somewhere you want to be or something you want to achieve?  Whether it's training for a new career, getting a promotion or moving house, having a goal gives your life purpose.  But it's important to remember not to have tunnel vision and be dismissive of outside influences.

Be inspired.  Have you ever read a magazine article about someone else's life or achievements and been envious?  Or have you watched a film and wished your life was more like one of the characters on the screen?  We all do it.  But how often do you dismiss the possibility and go back to your old ways?  Why not take a step back and really take the time to consider what aspects of that person's life you aspire to.  I'm sure there are elements you could achieve if you really tried.  Perhaps you'll revise your goals or add some new ones to your list as a result.

It's also important to consider how you influence other people.  You may not consider what you've achieved to date important, but believe me there are people out there who you have inspired.  Perhaps they aspire to your ability to organise everything around your hectic family life.  Or perhaps they are impressed by what you've achieved at work or the renovations you've made to your house.  None of these should be dismissed.

Remember, you choose your actions and your actions will always affect others.  So, make the most of you.  Remember, you are completely unique and have special gifts and talents.  Be ready to share them and let people enjoy them as much as you enjoy theirs.

Positive Practice

Do you have certain friends you turn to or colleagues that you approach when you need help? If you think about it, these people have special gifts that you are using. Have you ever considered what people see in you? What are your gifts? If you know what they are then you can put them to better use. So why not grab a cup of coffee and try this quick exercise:

  • Step One – Note down the qualities that you admire in others. What talents do they possess that you share in?
  • Step Two – Think about your own abilities? What can you offer other people? What makes your offering unique?
  • Step Three – Consider how you feel when you use your gifts to help other people? I bet it feels good doesn't it!?

Hopefully this exercise will make you more conscious of why people value you. Not only will it boost your confidence, but it will encourage you to make the most of your talents.

If you want to make the most of other people's skills and support to help you achieve your dreams, then read the How to Recruit Help to Achieve Your Dreams worksheet on my website.

What Can You Do?

Sheila from Cheltenham felt depressed

Sheila was a working mum with a lot on her plate. When she attended my Spring Forward course she was on the point of going to her doctor because she felt so low. After the course she started writing down anything that anyone said to her that was complimentary. This included anyone who said “I wish I could be more like you because…” or “You're so good at…” or even “Can you help me with this cos I know you're better than me at…”. She was amazed to see how many people were inspired by her in so many different ways. It made her feel much better and she resolved to do more of the things that she was good at.

What Can You Read?

The Charisma Effect by Andrew Leigh. We can all make a lasting impression, but we don't often know how we've done it. This book will help you distil the essential elements of ‘you' that contribute to creating a powerful impression.

Confidence by Rob Yeung. This book will help you uncover your strengths and use them towards creating a more confident and successful future.

Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. Understand how your snap decisions are made so you can find out how you can think more quickly.

Positive Praise

Your conference session in Darwin with the Spring Forward taster exercises was really helpful and thought provoking.  It helped me to clarify some of my ideas around leadership and now I know I am a leader not a follower!”
