April

Dear Anne

Spring is here and my daffs are just beginning to open. But just recently we've been experiencing extreme winter weather conditions. Do you have a spring in your step at the moment, or is life as confusing as the weather? It's time for action. Although we all want to be happy, many of us have been looking for happiness in the wrong places. This month you'll rediscover what makes you happy and I'll challenge you to make some positive changes.

Who else do you know who would like to receive a free burst of Positive Energy each month? I'm giving away a voucher to be spent on Amazon to the person who forwards this email on and encourages the highest number of new Positive Energy sign-ups in April! If you've been forwarded this issue and would like to sign up to receive your own, free boost of Positive Energy every month, just click here.

Cheers,

The Positive Part – How do You Tap into Your Inner Happiness?

“Happiness cannot come from without. It must come from within. It is not what we see and touch or that which others do for us which makes us happy; it is that which we think and feel and do, first for the other fellows and then for ourselves.” Helen Keller

Do you ever find yourself asking, ‘what makes me happy?' We are often misled into thinking that happiness comes from the outside. We believe it's something that will happen to us. If you think like you'll only ever experience quick happiness fixes.

Society and the media are constantly dictating what will make us happy. But you're completely unique. It's time to become your own happiness expert by listening to your inner voice and tapping into your own resources. Once you rediscover what makes you happy and start breaking down the barriers rather than focusing on them, then your life will change dramatically.

You'll find inner peace and discover unexpected self esteem. Not only that, but you'll worry far less and learn to trust yourself and your instincts. And when that happens you will make more and more right decisions and your inner happiness and confidence will grow. It's a virtuous circle.

Positive Practice
This is a great exercise which will boost your confidence and help you start rediscovering what makes you happy. It will also challenge you to enjoy a little of what you deserve in life.

  • Firstly, list 10 things about yourself that you like. They can be personal qualities, physical things about yourself, or even things that you've done or achieved. Keep this list somewhere you can see it. Add to it regularly.
  • Next, list 10 good things that you could do for yourself. Don't break the bank. Just take time to think of 10 things that will make you happy. Perhaps it's a long fragrant bath or a walk in the country? Or maybe you'd love to catch up with a friend over a drink?
  • Finally, make a date. Write down in your diary when you are going to do at least four things on your list in the next two weeks!

This final step is essential. It's too easy to focus on barriers and find excuses for not doing these things. But you are responsible for your own life and happiness. There's no one else to blame for your choices. So do something good for yourself today and start filling your diary!

If you know from experience that you are easily put off new experiences or making changes, then click through to my website to view my latest worksheet. It's designed to help you break down the barriers that are preventing you from reaching your goals by being your own mentor.

What Can You Do?

Abigail from Louth talked herself into happiness.

Abigail was miserable. She had a good job and a supportive family but she was still unhappy most of the time. She came on a Spring Forward programme and tried out one of the visualisation exercises. She was nervous about doing this but it helped her realise that most of her unhappiness was due to what had been going on inside her head. She'd been telling herself that things would go wrong, she'd mess things up or she was no good at what she was doing. In short she was talking herself into being unhappy. After that she started to keep a happiness log, writing down a few things that went right every day. She also told herself more supportive things in her head. Soon she felt much happier. As a result of that she stopped worrying continually and became much more productive at work.

What Can You Read?

The Self Esteem Workbook by Linda Field. Full of straightforward exercises, this book will teach you to believe in yourself and increase the success and happiness in your life.

It's Your Life What Are You Going to Do With It?: Coach Yourself by Anthony M Grant and Jane Greene. This is like having a life coach in a book. Dip into it or work though it systematically to achieve real change in your life.

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. Don't be put off by the size of this book. Choose one habit to focus on each week or month and you'll soon see significant change in many areas of your life.

The Happiness Project. Read Gretchen Rubin's blog where she is spending a year trying every way to be happy.

What's Happening?

Partnerships in York

I'm working with a client in York who would like to run a women's development programme in collaboration with another local partner organisation. This will greatly increase the networking value of the programme and may lead to other partner projects in the future. If you know of anyone who may be interested in this please ask them to contact me ASAP.

Make £15,000 for your company

You may be interested in two articles that I've written this month which you can print out or forward to colleagues. They may be helpful to you if you are making a business case internally for women's development or other key gender based interventions such as an equal pay review. The evidence says if we remove gender segregation in the workplace then we'll improve the UK economy by £23billion. That's £15,000 for every company in the UK.
